«3 x 1 Garter Rib Socks»

Teach Yourself Visually:  Sock Knitting (Hoboken, New Jersey), 2008, pp. 147-150.

This simple pattern is aesthetic and conservative.  Although the pattern calls for 2‑mm (U.K. 14, U.S. 0) needles, I used 2.75‑mm (U.K. 12, U.S. 2) needles.  The two pairs of striped socks were knit with Red Heart brand Heart and Sole in the colourway toasted almond.  The green pair of socks were knit from 24,821 stitches each and were made with Knit Picks Essentials in the colourway trooper tweed.

Here are corrections I made to the pattern:

  1. SIZE

  2. W Med (W Lrg, M Sm, M Med)

  3. TURN THE HEEL

  4. Step 1.  Row 1 (RS):  * Sl 1 pwise wyib, k1 *, rep from * to * across 20 (20, 22, 24) sts, ssk, k1, turn.

  5. Step 2.  Row 2 (WS):  Sl 1, p5 (6, 6, 7), p2tog, p1, turn.

  6. Step 5.  Rep rows 3 and 4 until you have worked all heel sts, ending with ssk and p2tog if you don't have enough sts to end with k1.  20 (20, 22, 24) sts rem.

«Double Basket» Socks

Little Box of Socks

I used 2.75‑mm (UK 12, US 2) needles with Shoreline Twist from Knit Picks.  I used thinner yarn and smaller needles than the pattern recommends so I could add stitches without altering the design yet still have socks that fit perfectly.  Because the pattern suggests, I carried the pattern down the heel.  This requires reading a chart backward and transposing symbols in alternate pattern rows.  Yuck.  I prefer written instructions to charts.
