«Candlelight» Bedspread

First Book of Modern Lace Knitting

A bedspread from any size thread is quite an undertaking; and most bedspread patterns call for «bedspread weight» thread, or 10-weight thread.  The smaller thread for this project means many more stitches for the same size bedspread.

The pattern was written for a single-size bed, and I adapted the pattern to make a full-size bedspread.  I also substituted polyester for cotton and wasted months trying to work with it.  After a while I was convinced the problem was not with my knitting but with the fiber I chose; so, I knit a swatch from cotton, which was easy to do, and confirmed my suspicion.

Michael Kaprelian was generous to consult with me on this project, and one of his suggestions was to use lyocell.  When I could not find lyocell in Tex 27, I tried 100 percent polyester, then 100 percent rayon.  Neither knit well because they are nonelastic.  I shall come back to this project someday.

«Rose Leaf» Settee Back

First Book of Modern Lace Knitting

I knit this using thread markers from very fine thread, which I never do; and I was reminded why I never use stitch or thread markers:  After I knit up several inches, I could tell where each marker had been positioned in every row.  I scrapped the project, and I will knit it another time without markers.
