Matthew’s Thread Work

Knit Lace Projects

Acknowledgments, Award, and Recognition

Meaningful acknowledgment of others is not only gracious but an opportunity to consider the effects of people and community on one's thoughts and deeds. — Matthew Wergeland

Acknowledgments

My chief blessing in life is a loving set of parents.  Without their constant encouragement in all my endeavours, neither this site nor the needlework presented on it would exist.  Special thanks are due to my father for teaching me about computer programming — and, by extension, about Web programming — and to my mother for teaching me the needlecrafts of knitting, crochet, and cross-stitch.  Together my parents inspired me and cultivated the patience I needed to learn these skills and so much more in life.  Above all, I praise my Creator and thank Him for my parents.

A yarn shop or knitting group near my home is nowhere to be found.  The closest knitting group meets at a yarn shop in a neighbouring county, but the shop is too far for me to attend the gatherings; so, my only access to fibre camaraderie outside my home is found in the on-line fibre community.  With the myriad ways to reach out or be reached on-line, there is no need for anyone to feel lonely or want for projects.  There are knit-along activities, secret pal exchanges, public message boards, Web logs, fibre and tool shops, Podcasts, and free patterns.  Look for these resources and enjoy the support of on-line friends.

Through listening to my favourite Podcasts, I feel connected with the lives and interests of other fibre artists.  I am grateful the producers are so passionate about their arts and/or crafts to share on-line with me and other isolated artists and crafters.  Of course, one need not be isolated to appreciate the benefits of Podcasts:  The programmes offer book, magazine, dye, loom, and spinning wheel reviews; pattern discussions; and interviews with designers, manufacturers, shop owners, and other artists and/or crafters.

There is an obscene number of fibre related Podcasts to which I subscribe, and I wish to acknowledge the contribution these programmes make to my enjoyment of fibre.  This is not a complete list of fibre related Podcasts, simply a partial list of those I enjoy, listed alphabetically.  Yes, I really subscribe to each programme in this list and more.  Not all are being produced currently, but in most instances past episodes are available still.  In keeping cancelled programmes on my list, it is my hope that someday the producers will see fit to resume Podcasting.  For entries when episodes have not been produced for more than a few months, the last production date is specified after the Podcast name to signal you to this fact.  You may subscribe to them by searching with your preferred Podcast aggregator; i.e., iTunes.

Especially worthy of recognition are four Podcasts.  They are highly valued.  Each one of them should win an award in journalism.  To these producers, a big thank you!

  1. Cast On — Brenda Dayne is an American author, designer, knitter, spinner, dyer, and dog lover living in Wales.  She produces her Podcast at home, where many hand knit sweaters line her closets.  The fluid, conversational style and colourful words of this programme make me feel I am there in Wales.  «If you’re cold, put on a sweater; that’s what they’re for.»

  2. Changeling’s Knit and Stitch Podcast — Excellently written and produced «Visits to the Yarn Store» and «Starbuckles Chronicles» monologues as well as thrift tips will keep you coming back for more of this Australian Podcast!

  3. KnitCast — Marie Irshad is a Welsh knitter.  Each of her episodes consists of an interview either by telephone or on location.

  4. Sticks & String Podcast — David Reidy is a knitter, spinner, and cat lover who lives in Australia.  He produces his Podcast at home and on location.  Whilst I enjoy every moment of this programme, what I find most compelling are the essays included in most episodes.  With his essays David Reidy adds meaning to my knitting.  «Keep knitting.»
